I went to the Dr. on Friday. I've been getting severe insomnia the week before my menstruation cycle starts. It has been getting a little bit worse every month since I gave birth. Now it is interfering with my life and some days I have to cancel everything because I don't think it is safe to drive after sleeping three hours in two days.
I also become very forgetful and tired and blah. I am sure that anyone who doesn't sleep for 3-4 days would also become this way. My doctor told me that I have PMDD. She said during our cycle we produce less serotonin (really don't we need it the most during that point in our cycle). She said that I probably had ran out of extra serotonin and my body is too exhausted to recover from month to month and make the little extra we need during menstruation.
So she put me on anti-depressants. Doctors have offered me anti-depressants for everything from back pain to my husband being in Iraq. I am incredibly weary of getting on them. I think that if there are things in your life that make you sad (your husband over seas) and you are not able to deal with it well you should possibly need anti-depressants but only with the treatment of also seeing a counselor (and one that in licensed).
This time is different though she actually thinks I have a chemical imbalance so I've decided to go along with the treatment plan. She also offered to put me on birth control pills, but the weirdest thing is that they make me a total nutcase. So I chose the path unknown in hopes of getting a good nights rest at the time of the month when I need it the most. She put me on a very low dose and we are going to see how it all works out. Perhaps this month I'll get back to normal.

I hope they work out for you! Remember, it takes a while to get the dosage right, so they may have to tweek it. It's not a give'er a 2 week try and if you're not better call it quits.
ReplyDeleteGood luck! Hope the meds work out for you.
ReplyDeleteI hope it works for you. Moms of littles need the most sleep - of course they are the ones that get the least.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone I do hope they work!
ReplyDeleteYes MiMi I know alot about anti-depressants my mother was on and off them most of my life.
I have a follow scheduled already to check the dose and am in this for the long haul. The Dr.'s might not be able to fix my back but I know there are lots of treatments for insomnia!
Good luck! It's so frustrating dealing with medical issues - and I personally never really believe doctors know anything. But sometimes you have to take a leap of faith and just hope for the best.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this important post.
